History: On March 9, 1961, the Soviet Union’s Sputnik 9 flew several frogs, a guinea pig, and a dog named Chernushka (Blackie) into orbit and returned them to Earth. The flight was deemed a failure when scientists determined none of the animals came back with superpowers.
