In 1945, in the midst of WWII, the Cooperative for American Remittances to Europe (CARE) began a program aimed at sending food to Europe, where the population was at risk of starvation thanks to Hitler and his fellow Nazi scumbags. The shipments of food became known as CARE packages and symbolized transatlantic support for American allies and resistance to the evil ideologies inherit in Nazism.
CARE eventually switched up its acronym to stand for Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere. And over time, the concept of a “care package” became more generalized, referring to packages of food, money, and luxury items that are sent to loved ones far from home.
A few years back when I started this blog, I posted a Daily Care Package that focused on cultural touchstones that I shared with my readers as a way to celebrate the good in the world. During the Covid-19 pandemic, I transformed the care package to be more of an informational resource. Then it returned to a more casual form after that scary time had passed. The Daily Care Package has had its share of starts and stops. More stops than starts, unfortunately. But I’ve posted over a thousand of them, and they are all archived here on the blog.
Now, in late-winter of 2025, it’s time to bring it back. And this time, I’m leaning into the historical significance of the concept. The new Daily Digital CARE Package is debuting at a time when America’s future has never looked grimmer or more uncertain. In a matter of weeks, we’ve become a country that seems to revel in the very ideologies that were once anathema to the American way. So my intent is to publish digital CARE packages as a small act of resistance.
It ain’t much, but it’s honest work.
For my purposes here, the CARE in CARE package stands for Correspondences for American Resistance and Endurance. My hope is that I can strike a balance between celebrating the good things in the world, sharing information that needs a signal boost, and connecting with those who still believe in an America that isn’t just the way it used to be, but one that is even better.
I’ve been sick for a while and cannot do things like get out and protest and march. I just don’t have the energy for it, no matter how much I wish I did. I’m also aware that what I’m trying to do here isn’t going to change the world. And I also know that this isn’t enough. But it’s a start.
One other thing I’m hoping for is a bit of community-building. If you’ve got something you think is worth sharing here, feel free to send it my way. I can’t make guarantees, but if I vet the information and it’s legit, there’s a decent chance I’ll share it.
The new Daily Digital CARE Package starts now.
