Peep Show

As carolers are to Christmas, so peepers are to spring.

Nothing tells you the time has arrived like a chorus of full-throated singing.

I heard this year’s line-up for the first time when I got home this evening. They sound good. Not too pitchy like you get with a lot of young singers.

If there’s a more comforting sound in nature than the peeping of peepers. I’d like to hear it. Especially if it’s a polar bear that sounds like Barry White. I bet that would be super comforting

Spring peepers are in the genus of chorus frogs. “Spring peeper” is the actual name of the animal. In Latin, its name is Pseudacris crucifer, which means “cross bearing,” or possibly “fake Ludacris on a cross.” Scientists will tell you the name is on account of the cross pattern on peepers’ backs. Poets will tell you it’s because they carry the burden of springtime’s anthem.

Poets, amirite?

Anyway, just felt like sharing a bit about my swamp-dwelling friends. The animal ones, anyway.

Enjoy the sound of spring’s arrival.
