Professor Sandman’s Cosmic Jukebox of Harmonic Consciousness: MISSED THE BOAT by Modest Mouse

3.22.24

Everyone’s unhappy, everyone’s ashamed

Well, we all just got caught looking at somebody else’s page

Well, nothing ever went quite exactly as we planned

Our ideas held no water, but we used them like a dam

When it comes to lyrical content, Missed the Boat is one of the tops for me.

A track from Modest Mouse’s 2007 album, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, it’s an exploration of the many ways we tend to trip ourselves up and set ourselves up for failure as humans.

Hubris, arrogance, greed, cognitive dissonance … they’re all topics on display as the band delivers one of the strongest songs of its long career. It’s a song that’s both jarring and comforting, part of an album that’s jarring and comforting.

I don’t have much more to say than that tonight. It’s been a tough week. I almost didn’t write anything at all. But now that it’s done, I’m glad I did.

Thanks for reading.
