If you don’t already know, I’m a 3rd grade teacher. This is my second year teaching, and I can say without a doubt that being an educator is the role I was meant to have.
We’ve been on break for nearly a week and a half — our longest break of the year. And we return to school on Wednesday. It was sorely needed time off for students and staff alike as we head toward warmer weather and the last trimester of the school year.
Breaks are a wonderful time to relax, do not much of anything, and have fun. But I gotta say, I miss my students. And I miss the routine. It’ll be good to return to what one of my former instructors calls “the difficult, joy-filled work” of teaching.
Too louche attention is paid to the difficult part of education, and the joy-filled part is often forgotten about. Which is a shame.
There’s a lot of joy to be found in a classroom.
That’s why tonight’s musical selection is so … different.
Kids love what they call The Gummy Bear Song. It’s ridiculous and loud and chaotic and everything a fun kids’ song should be. Even the kids who claim not to like it actually kinda like it. I’ve seen it with my own two eyes.
And you know what? I like it too. It’s not in my regular rotation, but I appreciate what it does for the kiddos. It makes them smile and get weird. The world needs more of that.
I need more of that. It’ll be great to get back in the classroom.
