Professor Sandman’s Cosmic Jukebox of Harmonic Consciousness: GROOVE IS IN THE HEART by Deee-Lite

2.14.24

I’m not much of a dancer, and I’m too self-conscious to let it all out on the dance floor.

When I started dancing at my wedding reception, I was asked to please leave. By my wife.

You’ve been a wonderful audience. Be sure to try the liver.

Anyway …

Despite my ineptness on the dance floor, some songs make me dance (or at least strongly consider dancing).

One of those songs is Groove Is In the Heart, from Deee-Lite’s 1990 debut album, World Clique. It’s a song that’s held up incredibly well over the past 34 years, and it never fails to make me smile. The video is also a trip and a half.

Groove Is In the Heart is three minutes and 51 seconds of pure awesomeness. It’s got A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip rapping, guest vocals from Bootsy Collins, and a slide whistle. And it flows effortlessly across genres, taking the listener on a journey through house, funk, and rap.

Come on. What’s not to love?

And it’s Valentine’s Day, so give it a lesson. I guarantee you’ll find at least a little bit of groove in your own heart.
