I’m a bit out of sorts.
Got the stomach bug that’s been tearing through our school this past week. It’s far from the sickest I’ve been, but it’s enough that I don’t feel entirely like myself. And when I get sick, I don’t connect with music like I usually do.
Most nights I have a song ready to go for this little project. Tonight, I started and stopped with seven different tunes.
I finally settled in this number — the title track from Steve Winwood’s masterful 1988 album, Roll With It — because it’s been hanging around the corners of my brain lately. With so much that’s been going on these past few weeks, and after a day of feeling fairly lousy, “roll with it” is good advice.
There’s a ton I could write about this song and album, but it’s not in me tonight. I’ll come back to it sometime, though.
For now, I’ll let the song speak for itself.
When life is too much, roll with it, baby
Don’t stop and lose your touch, oh no, baby
Hard times knocking on your door
I’ll tell them you ain’t there no more
Get on through it, roll with it, baby
Luck’ll come and then slip away
You’ve gotta move, bring it back to stay
