Professor Sandman’s Cosmic Jukebox of Harmonic Consciousness: SWINGING PARTY by The Replacements

Jan. 13, 2024

Something I’ve worked hard on over the past eight years or so is developing and deepening my ability to engage in self-compassion.

Basically, self-compassion is treating yourself with the same kindness and grace that you treat your friends with.

One of the key aspects of self-compassion is understanding that you are not alone in your suffering. Others are experiencing or have experienced what you are going through, and acknowledging this helps break through the sense of isolation that comes with things like depression and anxiety.

“You are not alone” is a phrase that has literally saved countless lives. I know it’s saved mine.

Swinging Party — from The Replacements’ classic fourth album, Tim, released in 1985 — is a reminder that even in our fear, there are others with us. With us and willing to stay there even when things are at their worst.

It’s been said that misery loves company, but I haven’t found that to be the case. Because once company shows up, misery doesn’t stay as long as it would have otherwise.

If you’re dealing with tough things right now, know that it will pass. And know that you are not alone.

If being afraid is a crime, we hang side by side
At the swingin’ party down the line
