Professor Sandman’s Cosmic Jukebox of Harmonic Consciousness #1: SUCH GREAT HEIGHTS by The Postal Service

Jan. 1, 2024

Trying out something new for 2024 here on Facebook. I’m in the habit of listening to a song each night; whatever song happens to pop into my head and feels right. I’m going to try to share that song here as we edge toward sleep.

I thought about calling it Ethan’s Lullaby, but that feels like a bit much. So instead, it’ll be simply known as Professor Sandman’s Cosmic Jukebox of Harmonic Consciousness.

Will you hear classics from your youth? Of course. Cutting edge sounds that are so fresh you’ll want to smell them? Also yes. Maybe Disco Duck five nights in a row? I don’t know about … well, probably.

I’m kicking things off with an anthem for the new year. It’s a song that’s 20 years old in 2024, and I’ve never thought of getting tired of it. It’s also got some of my favorite lyrics:

And I have to speculate
That God Himself did make
Us into corresponding shapes
Like puzzle pieces from the clay

When I look at the year ahead, what I want more than anything is for us all to collectively rise above this place we’ve been stuck for far too long. It would be incredible a year from today to be able to look back and say, ”Look where we were. Today we’re in such a better place, and even though the path here was difficult and long, it was worth it.”

Sleep well.
